REPORT ON EYE CAMP - December 3, 2006

With the blessings of our beloved Sri Sakthi Amma, Sri Narayani Hospital & Reasearch Centre & Sankara Nethralaya, the leading eye institute, jointly conducted the Eye Camp. Guests of honor, Susan and Derek Bullen, Canadian devotees of Sri Sakthi Amma, lit the Kuthuvilakku and conducted a ceremonial prayer. Mr.N.Balaji, Director, welcomed them. Mrs.Selvi Srinivasan, the Public Relations Officer. also extended her warm welcome to the honored guests.

The Primary Goals of this Programme:
  • To identify cataract patients and conduct free surgeries for the needy and poor patients who live below the poverty line.
  • To create awareness among people about cataracts and eye care management

An explanation of cataracts was given to further educate the attendees. A cataract is an opacity of the normally clear, transparent crystalline lens. It is associated with aging but can develop at any age. It may also be associated with blunt or penetrating trauma, long-term corticosteroid use, systemic disease such as diabetes mellitus, hypoparathyroidism, radiaton exposure, exposure to bright sunlight for long hours (Ultraviolet light), or other eye disorders. Vision impairment depends on the size, density and location in the lens.

The Camp was attended by a total of 327 patients who underwent registration, physical examination, and screening by Dr.Madhavan. Patients' eyes were dilated and vision tests were conducted by the Refractionist. Out of 327 patients who were screened, 80 patients were scheduled for surgeries.

An awareness programme was conducted regarding the care and hygiene of the eye. Also, the structure, function and importance of the eyes were taught. For those scheduled for surgery, postoperative care instructions, such as not to expose their eye to the sunlight and to wear sunglasses, were given.

With the Guidance of Dr.Madhavan and the Community Health team, the Camp came to a successful close and was very much appreciated by attendees.
