REPORT ON DIABETIC CAMP - March 19, 2006
With the Divine blessing of our beloved Sri Sakthi Amma, Sri Narayani Hospital & Research Centre conducted a Diabetic Camp. Our General Superintendent, Dr.Surendra Babu was present on the occasion. The Camp started with a prayer, and Mr.Murugasen, Camp Coordinator, delivered the welcome speech. The Primary Goals of this Programme:
- To identify new diabetic patients and conduct free, random blood sugar tests for the needy and poor patients who live below the poverty line.
- To create awareness and knowledge among people about diabetic mellitus and its ill effects on eyes, nerves, and kidneys.
An explanation of diabetes mellitus was given to further educate attendees. It is a group of metabolic disorders characterized by elevated levels of blood glucose (hyperglycemia) resulting from defects in insulin production, secretion, decreased cellular response to insulin, or a combination of these factors. This leads to hyperglycemia, which may lead to acute metabolic complications, such as diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) & hyperglycemic hyperosmolar nonketotic (HHNS)syndrome. Long-term hyperglycemia may also contribute to chronic microvascular complication (kidneys & eye disease) and neuropathic complications. Diabetes is also associated with an increased occurrence of macrovascular disease, including coronary artery disease (myocardial infarction),cerebrovascular disease (stroke) and peripheral vascular disease.
The camp was attended by 117 patients who underwent registration, physical examination, and screening by Dr.Aravind. A Health Education lecture on diabetes millitus was given by Ms.Jayanthi, our Dietician. Out of 117 patients 25 patients were identified as diabetic. These patients have been scheduled for follow-up and treatment. For the rest of the attendees an awareness programme about diabetes mellitus risk factors was given.
With the Guidance of Dr.Aravind and the Community Health Team the Diabetes Camp successfully came to a close and was highly appreciated.

REPORT ON PEDIATRIC CAMP
Sri Narayani Hospital & Research Centre, conducted a Peadiatric camp on 07.03.06. General Superintendent Dr.Surendra Babu also attended the camp. The camp started with a prayer requesting Sri Sakthi Amma's abundant blessings.Welcome Speech was delivered by Mr.Murugasen,Camp Co-Ordinator.
The main aim to conduct this programme is:
- To find out Malnutrition and other Vitamin deficiency children from less privileged classes.
- To create awareness among the people about the knowledge of Nutrition and the Problems resulting due to deficiency of Nutrition.
Malnutrition is common and dangerous in children.Of the total number of deaths in India, about one-third are children under five years. Many die because they are malnourished or because disease like measles make their malnutrition worse. Any infection may make malnutrition worse and lead to death of the child.we need to treat both their malnutrition and their infections.
Marasmus means starvation and it is easy to diagnose. The child which is small and very thin with no fat under his skin, muscles wasted so that the child has a thin coverage skin over the bones. The child's face is so much shrinked that he looks like a little old man. The child is only about half the weight that he should have for his age and his arm circumference is much less than 14 cm He may have chronic diarrhoea. Some signs are like those of dehydration, but he does not have thirst and dry mouth.
The cause of marasmus may be that the mother has died, or had too little breast milk. Probably the child was given too little milk because no-one sterilized the feeding bottle, he got diarrhoea and the family stopped feeding him thinking that was the right treatment for diarrhoea. The child with marasmus needs more food.
Kwashiorkor is also called wet malnutrition. It is caused by not eating enough protein. A child with Kwashiorkor may look fat, but he will have oedema .He has swollen feet, hands and face. When you press the swollen parts, your finger makes a hole because there is too much fluid under the skin .He may be over-weight because of the oedema, but when the odema goes off, his weight will fall. Even with odema, the upper arms will be thin and will have circumference arm measuring very low. The child with kwashiorkor also has sores with peeling skin and his hair loses its natural colour., He is likely to have diarrhoea. He is unhappy and not active like other children of his age. Kwashiorkor is most common in children of about 1 ? years. It most often first appears when a child has diarrhoea or another infection such as measles.
It is important for everybody especially mothers to know that children need lots of nutritious food to grow well and stay healthy.
The camp had a total no.of 66 patients who underwent registration, physical examination and check-up by Dr.Srinivasa Prasad. Accordingly, free medicines were issued.
Apart from this, awareness programme has been conducted.Health education to the mothers and those caring for young children were advised with the following points.
- Give breast milk up to 2 years. Spacing the family helps.
- Give other nutritious foods also starting at 4 months.
- Boil the water, which the child drinks.
- Keep children and their surrounding clean.
- Get prompt treatment for any infection and have immunizations as per schedule.
- Bring the child regularly to the Peadiatricion.
Health Education on nutritional diets were given by Ms.Jayanthi, the Dietitcian and with the help of Dr.Srinivasa Prasad and Community Health team, the camp ended successfully.
