On January 25, 2006 Dr. Pardi delivered a talk titled “Pain Management for Cancer Patients”. Below is a brief narrative about this event.
SRI NARAYANI HOSPITAL & RESEARCH CENTER'S FIFTH CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION SEMINAR
The Fifth Seminar of the Continuing Medical Education Program was held on January 25, 2006 at the Conference Hall of the Sri Narayani Hospital and Research Centre. Dr. J. Surendra Babu, the General Superintendent, welcomed the gathering and guided the honoring of guests. Mr. N. Balaji, the Hospital's Executive Director, introduced the guests on the dais, Dr. Desiree Pardi and Mr. Robert Pardi from the U.S.A.
Dr. Desiree Pardi is a Fellow on the Pain and Palliative Care Service in the Department of Neurology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City , New York . Dr. Pardi began her symposium address by expressing the great impact that her visits to Sri Narayani Peedam and the Dharshan of His Holiness Arul Thiru Sakthi Amma had had upon her life. She also mentioned her gratitude to Dr. Mitchell Gaynor, an oncologist in New York City , who initially enlightened her about the Divine existence of ArulThiru Sakthi Amma.
Dr. Pardi presented a symposium on “Pain Management on Cancer Patients” based on the research she had undertaken at the famed Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre. Her research focused mainly on the specific kinds of pain experienced by cancer patients and the drugs and therapy designed for quick and permanent relief of these symptoms. She illustrated the steps of treatment for various stages of cancer by outlining a ladder of treatment hierarchy depending upon the degree and magnitude of pain.
At the close The Hospital's Executive Director raised a very important and sought after clarification. He mentioned that it was easy to know the place and degree of pain in adults as they can show the place of pain and explain its status. But how, he asked, is it possible to treat the same in children from whom you cannot infer any specific and dependable information? Dr. Pardi replied that this is a true concern, and that most of the time you will have to get the needed information from the parents. However, she also said that children over two years of age are actually more informative when asked than often thought possible.
Visitors from the United States and other parts of the world come to the Sri Narayani Peedam for reflection and an opportunity to provide service in one of the many programs started by Sakthi Narayani Amma.

Christmas day visitors went to a boys shelter supported by Sakthi Narayani Amma and spent the day entertaining the over 100 children living at the Shelter. In addition to entertainment, the children were treated to special foods - fruit, cake ice cream - making the day very joyous for them. Contributions to help feed, shelter, cloth and educate the 100s of children without homes is an investment in giving the next generation a helping hand as they prepare to assume their role in life.

Visitors with expertise in the health field spent time with the hospital's staff sharing information and introducing them to techniques, such as reflexology and sound therapy. Volunteers with expertise in health care can make an enormous difference in the lives of over 10 million people who lack access to adequate health care services before the Sri Narayani Hospital and Research Centre opened.

A group from the US, Australia and Singapore visited an orphanage supported by Sakthi Narayani Amma. One of the visitors played a classical piece of music on her viola. The children enjoyed the singing and dancing - it wasn't clear who enjoyed themselves more, the children at the orphange or the visitors to the orphanage. The love that was felt by all brought joy to everyone invovled. This is another project that benefits from the generousity of those supporting Amma's work.

When the tsunami hit India on December 26, 2004, Sakthi Narayani Amma was quick to mobilize assistance, providing clothing, food, water, medical supplies and medical assistance to the affected areas. Visitors at the Peedam worked with hospital staff loading supplies on trucks that were to bring relief aid to those in need.
